Since the birth of the written word, and possibly beforehand, stories of natural disasters have been told. Almost every culture in all parts of the globe have a story of a natural disaster that wiped out a civilization; ranging from the “Epic of Gilgamesh” to the biblical story of Sodom and Gomorrah to the story of the destruction of Atlantis. These stories, whether fictional or non-fictional, all have speak something important about the human psyche. They all function as cautionary tales of a power that is beyond the control of man – mother nature and her sometimes deadly fury. All of the disaster stories of all history have an overtone of anxiety against nature in which, at any given moment, everything can be taken away from civilization in an instant. That anxiety regarding a natural disaster is manifested different to according to culture; the Sodomites and the Gommorans were punished for their moral egregiousness. Atlantis succumbed to inevitable flooding despite their advanced intellect and technology. Gilgamesh was a demigod who is tragically humbled and made mortal by the wrath of nature. Regardless of the question of human morality, what unifies all of these stories is that the civilizations were overconfident and thus ill-prepared for what nature can throw at them. Every year over trillions of dollars are spent on reconstruction from and prevention of natural disasters, and extreme weather and geologic activity still kill thousands of people and destroy trillions of dollars worth of property annually. But what is a natural disaster? And how can one prepare for the worst but remain free enough to take the risks neccessary to innovate and create better ways to prepare for them. This question looms heavily on the minds of the victims of natural disasters and the governments of countries affected by natural disasters.

The fear of rapid natural change is considered the biggest threat to human civilization because we enjoy the comfort of stability. Unfortunately, we live on a planet that is constantly changing all of its properties. Mountains form as the earth’s crusts fold as a result of continental plate movement, canyons are carved through a long process of weatherization. Most geological change occurs quite slowly and humans can easily adapt to such change. But natural disasters are when nature decides to have a sudden sporadic burst of change, leaving humans with less of an ability to quickly adapt. Natural disasters are threatening because they are such a break in the predictable patterns of the Earth. The threat of natural disaster is a question of geography and the type of natural disaster to which a civilization is susceptible also depends on geography. There is not one part of the world that is invulnerable to at least one type of natural disaster. Avalanches and mudslides occur on the slopes of steep hills and mountains when the stability of snow or mud is compromised and gravity takes over with its path of destruction. Earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions happen along the boundaries of Earth’s shifting tectonic plates. Hurricanes and typhoons occur in areas with humid tropical and subtropical climates. Floods occur in areas near large bodies of water. Lightning storms occur in all parts of the world regardless of nearby geographic formations, potentially leading to wildfires in the forests.

Avalanches and Mudslides

An avalanche is a type of disaster that can occur unexpectedly but most occur when snow along a steep slope of a hill or mountain is somehow disturbed by the weight of an individual causing tons of snow to tumble heavily down the mountain. The disturbance in the snow cause a chain reaction with more and more snow accumulating and increasing in velocity and momentum as it progresses down the slope. Entire villages situated in the valleys of mountains have been buried under the suffocating cold. Avalanches are also known as the white death. Avalanche control experts at ski resorts and outlying vulnerable mountain villages constantly assess snow conditions that depend on temperature and density of snow to determine the likelihood of an avalanche occurring. The science is not perfect and the risk of an avalanche is always present. Avalanche control experts have the power to evacuate and close off sections of area that have an severely increased chance of avalanche. Canada reports 1.5 million potentially damaging avalanches a year.

Mudslides are a similar phenomenon to avalanches but do not involve snow. They generally occur during or after a heavy downpour of rain on a steep hillside with unpacked soil. With enough momentum a mudslide can travel miles from its point of origin. In the United States, for example, they occur mostly in the hilly regions of California, Tennessee, Utah, Kentucky, and Puerto Rico. They kill approximately 25 people and cause $1.5 billion in damages annually. Walls can be constructed to prevent them. Also, there is a strong corellation between deforestation on hillsides and the frequency of mudslides. Trees are thus planted to prevent mudslides give more stability to the soil.

Earthquakes, Tsunamis, and Volcanic Eruptions.

Earthquakes happen as a result of the shifting tectonic plates of the earth. There is no question that the continents of the planet and other minor plates are in constant motion, moving 1cm a year. Billions of years ago, the coast of South America and the coast of Western Africa fit together and were one super-continent. This theory is called continental drift and the theory is supported by the natural geological phenomenon known as earth quakes. Earth quates Where two plates of the Earth’s crust meet; they are called fault zones. At fault zones one piece of the earth’s crust will slide under the other. At an intersection of converging faults, the plates are in constant motion and energy is building up until the tension in the crust is released in a high energy tremor causing the earth to shake violently. About 80% of the world’s earthquakes occur along the Pacific rim along the coast of Asia, Japan, Indonesia, Australia, Chile, Peru, the west coasts of Mexico, Canada, and the United States. Earthquakes do occur in other areas but with less frequency. Earthquakes are not dangerous in underdeveloped areas because there are no buildings and infrastructure that could have structural failure and crush human beings. Geologists study patterns in the tremors of the Earth using seismographs but these instruments are not able to predict an earthquake, they can only tell the magnitude of an earthquake on a scale between 0 and 10. Ten being the most severe. The devastating 2010 Haitian Earthquake was of a magnitude of 7.0, killing hundreds of thousands.

Tsunamis

Tsunamis are closely related to earthquakes because they all begin as earthquakes. The earthquake’s epicenter, or point of origin, begins either in an are very close to the coast or in the middle of the ocean. The energy from the earthquake radiates in a large circular ripple that creates a heavy movement of water that eventually creates a large tidal wave when it reaches a coastline near or distant, causing massive flooding. Tsunamis cannot be prevented but after the devastating 2004 Asian tsunami event that affected over 50 different countries in Asia along the Indian ocean’s coast, an international tsunami warning system was implemented to arrange the evacuation of people to higher ground.

Volcanoes

Volcanoes are another type of disaster closely related to earthquakes and tectonic plate boundaries. Volcanoes are vents on of earth that can spew molten rock from the below the surface of the earth to the surface releasing debris, poisonous gases and magma. Volcanoes occur where two tectonic plates meet and instead of one piece going under the other, the two pieces of the earth’s crust collide and create a vent that reveals the molten rock under the earths surface. Volcanoes are destructive but are also responsible for the formation of some of earth’s most beautiful geological formations like the Hawaiian islands. Volcanic eruptions release poisonous sulfuric gases, molten rock called lava, and can explode and cause an avalanche of a large could of scorching rock, dust, and debris known as a pyroclastic flow. Pyroclastic flows are the most devastating aspect of a volcanic eruption and cause the most deaths related to a volcanic eruption. The most famous example of destruction as a result of pyroclastic flow is the ancient volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Italy in 79AD that destroyed the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, leaving many of the town’s inhabitants mummified in volcanic ash. Volcanic eruptions are somewhat predictable and fortunately, many of earth’s volcanoes are incapable of forming a pyroclastic cloud. The Pacific Ring of Fire has 75% of the worlds dormant and active volcanoes.

Hurricanes, Typhoons, and Tornadoes

Hurricanes and typhoons are giant tropical storms that have sustained winds of 100mph or above. Gusts can be as fast as 200mph. These storms are also capable of releasing over 2.4 trillion gallons of rain. Hurricanes begin as tropical disturbances in warm ocean waters with surface temperatures of at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26.5 degrees Celsius). With increased humidity and more heat, these storms grow in size and severity from tropical depression, to tropical storm, and to hurricanes. There are 5 different categories of hurricanes; 5 being the most severe with sustained winds. A hurricane that occurs in the Pacific Ocean is called a typhoon. Hurricanes season in the Atlantic Ocean starts in mid-August and finishes in late-October. Floods and wind damages are the cause of death and property damage in hurricanes.

Tornadoes

Tornadoes are vertical funnel clouds of spinning air. They carry deadly debris that shoot like projectiles at people and property. They can move anywhere from 10mph to 20mph leaving a path of destruction. The speeds of the wind created by the funnel cloud range from 40 up to 379mph. There are five different types of tornadoes F-1 through F-5, 5 is the most severe with winds over 340-379mph. All tornadoes form the same way, when changes in wind speed and direction create a horizontal spinning effect. The most famous region in the world for its proneness to tornadoes is the American Midwest from Texas to the Dakotas, known as Tornado alley. There are no ways to prevent tornadoes, they can be predicted and evacuations of areas that are warned is a common practice. Underground tornado cellars are also a common feature of residences in the rural American Midwest.

Floods

Floods occur as an overflow of a body of water as a result of tidal patterns or heavy rain. The Ancient Egyptians depended on the seasonal flooding of the Nile River as a means of agricultural sustenance. Floods can get out of hand and cause serious water damage to property and people are at risk of drowning. Flooding is by far the most costly of all natural disasters. Civil Engineers build levies, dams, floodgates, and land reclamation as means of mitigating floods but they all have limitations in their ability of preventing floods. Evacuations to higher ground is another way to preserve life from the dangers of flooding.
